New York Day 1

We recently took a trip to the Big Apple for a wedding and general sightseeing. It was loads of fun and very memorable, but not something I would recommend doing while pregnant. A nice lazy rest on the beach would have been more conducive to my condition ;) Still, I'm glad we went, especially because we got to catch up with lots of family we don't see very often. Following is a summary of our adventures.

Day 1, Wednesday
Our biggest mistake: Tuesday-night red-eye flight. Thought we'd get as much time as we could in the city. Also thought we'd sleep on the flight. Turns out we got 0 sleep and cut our first day in the city short as a result. But, since Wednesday was the only day we could get tickets to the crown of the Statue of Liberty, it was still a pretty eventful day.

We took the AirTran to the Subway, the Subway to Penn Station where we left our bags, then the Subway to Battery Park, all before breakfast. I was afraid the baby would die of starvation. I was certainly getting there. But we found an awesome little Mexican hole-in-the-wall where a variety of breakfast bagels, sandwiches and burritos offered some of everything, appropriate as it was called Toda Cafe. Best egg and cheese bagel I've ever eaten. Not sure now where we stumbled upon it, but it was great!

We made it to Battery Park and what started out as a warm morning had become a windy, chilly day, so I added leggings and socks to my outfit before we took the ferry over to the statue. What followed was 350+ steep, winding stairs to the crowded top and a great view. Also a swaying, slightly frightening view. We ambled around the grounds taking pictures, and after several hours and four sore feet later, opted to skip Ellis Island in lieu of a quick lunch and home sweet hotel. Also a ridiculous number of bathroom breaks for the preggo with no bladder capacity.

Lunch was some fabulous pizza from another hole-in-the-wall cafe lined with locals, a turn around Ground Zero, and then back to Penn Station to catch the train to New Jersey. It was a relaxing hour-long ride with beautiful views of the fall foliage and countryside. Those rides were one of the highlights for us.

Thank goodness for delivery, a hot bath, and sleep at the end of a looong 24 hours!
